Indonesia Ends 20-Year Bad Record With 3-0 Win at Home to Vietnam

REPUBLICA.CO.ID, HANOI -- The Indonesian national team ended a bad 20-year winless record against Vietnam at its home base. Now the Garuda squad of Shin Tae-yong managed to win and clean sheet with a score of 3-0 in the qualifying round of the World Cup 2026 Asia Zone at My Dinh Stadium, Hanoi, Tuesday (26/3/2024) evening WIB.

Indonesia's two debutants performed brilliantly, Thom Haye notching an assist on Jay Idze's goal and Ragnar Oratmangoen putting his own name on the scoreboard to double the lead. In the minute of added time, Indonesia sealed victory through a goal by Ramadan Sananta.

The additional three points strengthen Indonesia's position in second-placed Group F of the second round of the 2026 World Cup qualification Asian zone. Indonesia currently has seven points in second place after Iraq with 12 points at the top of the table.

Indonesia had the first chance in the third minute through a corner kick situation. A pass from Thom Haye managed to create a scrum in the Vietnamese penalty box. But the experiments that Jay and Hubner made were still able to be blocked by the rearguard.

The shots on target were successfully unleashed by the Vietnamese in the fifth minute. It was performed by Khuag Van Khang after getting a pass and passing Jay's guard. Lucky his shot at goal was successfully secured by Ernando Ari.

With a minute to go, Hokky capitalized on a mistake on the Vietnamese defensive line. He snatched the ball from the opponent's possession and made an attempt with a long-range shot. However it can still be well secured by Nguyen Filip.

Indonesia took the lead early in the 8th minute. It was created through a corner-kick situation. Jay Idzes is uncontrollable when welcoming a corner kick pass from Thom Haye. The score is 1-0 for Indonesia's advantage. It was a resounding record for both players, Thom Haye notching an assist on his debut and Idzes scoring in his second appearance.

Ernando made a crucial save in the 11th minute from Nguyen Tien Linh's horn while receiving a pass in the penalty box. Both teams pressed aggressively in the early 15 minutes with few chances successfully created. Really shows a fierce fight for the rival of fellow Southeast Asian vice.

Indonesia doubled the lead in the 23rd minute. This time, it was Ragnar Oratmangoen who scored on his debut with Indonesia. It started from a short pass between Ragnar, Nathan and Thom on the left side of the attack. Ragnar then passed five Vietnamese defenders before finally executing a kick into the net. The score is 2-0 to Indonesia.

In the 27th minute, Tien Linh almost reduced the arrears as he earned a chance when he received a pass in the penalty box. However his shot to the far post still missed the mark. Ernando again made a resounding save in the 32nd minute from Van Khang's free-kick that headed straight into the net.

The Vietnamese continued to struggle to catch up to their rear. However, the first half ended with a 2-0 score for Indonesia's lead.

Vietnam pressed from the early minutes of the second half. But Indonesia's defense sector was able to handle the threat Vietnam was building from below. Shin Tae-yong changed his strategy by installing deeper defensive lines and using counterattacks to threaten Vietnam's defenses.

Egy failed to capitalise on a chance from Nathan's pull-back pass in the 55th minute. That was created through quick counter-attacks as well with a toe-to-toe game. However Egy failed to welcome the pass he received in the Vietnamese goalmouth.

Hoang Viet Anh missed a golden opportunity when he received the ball in the penalty box from situssi corner kick. His shot which stood unguarded, however, still missed well over the crossbar. Rizky Ridho blocked an effort from Vietnam in the Indonesia penalty box when he received a pull pass from Nguyen Van Toan after he had passed Nathan.

Indonesia sealed victory with a third goal in the final minutes through a goal by Ramadan Sananta who tapped the second ball of Edo's try from outside the box. The 3-0 score sealed Indonesia's victory over Vietnam.
